A tragic aviation accident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport has left two pilots dead and dozens injured after an Air Canada Express jet collided with a fire truck during landing, raising serious concerns about air traffic coordination and airport safety.
What Happened at LaGuardia
The incident occurred late Sunday night when Air Canada Express Flight AC8646, operated by Jazz Aviation, was landing at LaGuardia after departing from Montreal. The aircraft was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members.
At around 11:40pm, the Bombardier CRJ-900 jet struck a Port Authority fire truck that had entered the runway while responding to a separate emergency involving a United Airlines flight that reported an unusual odour onboard.
Audio recordings captured the tense final moments, with controllers shouting, “Stop, stop, stop,” as they attempted to prevent the collision.
Despite the warning, the aircraft collided with the vehicle on the runway, causing severe damage to the cockpit area.

The crash claimed the lives of the pilot and co-pilot, both seated in the cockpit, which was largely destroyed on impact.
A total of 41 people were taken to hospitals, including 39 passengers and two firefighters who were inside the emergency vehicle at the time of the crash. Most injuries were not life-threatening, though several passengers required further medical care.
Authorities confirmed that all passengers survived, highlighting what many described as a narrow escape from a far more devastating disaster.
Investigation and Possible Causes
Preliminary findings suggest a breakdown in communication between air traffic control and ground operations. The fire truck had been cleared to cross the runway moments before the landing aircraft approached, pointing to a possible coordination failure.
Investigators from the US National Transportation Safety Board have recovered the flight data and cockpit voice recorders and are working alongside Canadian authorities to determine the exact sequence of events.
Aviation experts have raised concerns about staffing shortages and the handling of simultaneous emergencies, noting that such incidents highlight vulnerabilities in airport safety systems.
Wider Impact and Response
The crash forced the temporary closure of LaGuardia Airport, disrupting hundreds of flights and affecting thousands of passengers. Flights were diverted to nearby airports including JFK and Newark, adding pressure to an already strained US aviation system.
US President Donald Trump described the crash as “terrible” and added that “they made a terrible mistake,” reflecting growing scrutiny over aviation safety standards.
Air Canada expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling it a “sombre day” for the airline and pledging support for victims and their families.
Growing Safety Concerns
The LaGuardia crash is among the most serious runway incidents in recent years and has reignited debate over air traffic control protocols, staffing shortages, and emergency coordination at busy airports.
Experts warn that as air travel demand rises, ensuring seamless communication between pilots, controllers, and ground vehicles will be critical to preventing similar accidents in the future.
