India has formally stepped up its bid to host the 2038 Asian Games, with Ahmedabad emerging as the proposed host city, in what officials describe as a key move to position the country as a global hub for major sporting events.

The decision follows the submission of an expression of interest by the Indian Olympic Association to the Olympic Council of Asia, signalling the country’s intent to bring the continent’s biggest multi-sport event back to India after more than five decades.

“Indian Olympic Association has already sent an expression of interest to OCA for organising the 2038 Asian Games in Ahmedabad,” IOA President P. T. Usha said, adding that discussions with Asian sporting authorities had been encouraging.

Ahmedabad at the centre of sporting ambitions

Ahmedabad has become central to India’s long-term sports strategy, having already been confirmed as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and identified as a key venue in the country’s bid for the 2036 Olympics.

Officials say the city’s modern infrastructure, including world-class stadiums and growing sports facilities, makes it a strong candidate to host large-scale international events.

The Olympic Council of Asia has acknowledged India’s interest and is expected to carry out further evaluations, including potential site visits, before the final selection process begins.

The 2038 Asian Games remain open for bidding, with other countries including South Korea and Malaysia also expressing interest in hosting the event.

Strategic push for global sporting status

India’s latest move is part of a broader effort to secure a decade of major sporting events, aimed at boosting infrastructure, tourism and international recognition.

The country previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982, both in New Delhi, and is now seeking to expand its footprint by bringing the event to a new city.

Sports analysts say hosting events such as the Asian Games can have significant economic and social benefits, including job creation, improved infrastructure and increased global visibility.

The planned bid also aligns with India’s ambition to host the Olympics, with Ahmedabad positioned as a central hub for multiple sporting disciplines and facilities.

However, experts note that large-scale sporting ambitions also come with challenges, including the need for sustained investment, governance reforms and ensuring that infrastructure development benefits athletes at all levels.

The Olympic Council of Asia is expected to finalise the host city after a multi-stage evaluation process, with further clarity likely in the coming years.
