Apple is reportedly planning one of the biggest iPhone redesigns in years with the rumored “iPhone 20 Pro,” a device expected to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027 with a nearly bezel-free display and no visible screen cutouts.
According to new reports and renders shared by tech insider Jon Prosser, Apple’s long-term iPhone roadmap includes a major visual overhaul aimed at creating a fully immersive display experience.
The device is expected to follow the release of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models, which are reportedly part of a broader three-year redesign strategy inside Apple.
Reports suggest Apple may skip the “iPhone 19” branding entirely, similar to how it skipped the iPhone 9, and instead launch the anniversary model as the iPhone 20 Pro.
The upcoming flagship reportedly removes the Dynamic Island entirely instead of replacing it with a punch-hole camera.
That means the display could appear completely uninterrupted for the first time in modern iPhone history.
Apple reportedly aims for ‘Liquid Glass Display’
The leaked design shows a display curving gently into all four edges of the chassis while maintaining an almost flat viewing experience.
Apple is also reportedly testing a new anti-reflective coating technology that may debut under the name “Liquid Glass Display.”
The company hopes the technology will improve visibility and make the edge-to-edge design appear more seamless.
According to reports, Apple additionally wants to eliminate physical buttons and speaker grilles in future versions of the iPhone, replacing them with touch-sensitive controls and hidden audio systems.
However, insiders say some of those ambitions may not be technically ready by 2027.
Apple is also said to be working on a next-generation battery system that increases capacity without requiring additional space inside the phone.
The company reportedly does not plan to use silicon-carbon battery technology already appearing in several Chinese smartphones.
Industry analysts say Apple’s ultimate goal is to create an iPhone that looks more like a single piece of glass than a traditional smartphone.
Technical hurdles continue ahead of iPhone 20 launch
Despite the ambitious vision, reports suggest Apple continues facing major technical obstacles.
The company originally hoped to move Face ID beneath the display in the iPhone 18 Pro as preparation for the all-screen anniversary model.
However, under-display Face ID components reportedly remain slower and less accurate than Apple’s current system.
Reports additionally claim Apple has struggled with display distortion near the curved edges and minor brightness inconsistencies.
Sources familiar with the development process say the iPhone 18 Pro may ultimately serve as a transitional device while Apple continues refining its long-term design goals.
Even so, analysts believe Apple’s push toward distraction-free displays could influence the broader smartphone industry over the coming years.
The iPhone remains Apple’s most important product and continues generating more than half of the company’s annual revenue.
Apple has not officially commented on the leaked renders or future iPhone roadmap reports.
