HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot has encountered its first major off-screen controversy before the series premiere.
Child actor Gracie Cochrane, who was cast as Ginny Weasley, has exited the production ahead of the second season.
Her family said “unforeseen circumstances” forced the decision.
The exit has increased attention around the reboot, which already faces intense scrutiny over casting choices and comparisons with the original films.
In a joint statement, Cochrane’s family described the decision as difficult but positive.
“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds,” the statement said.
HBO also confirmed the actor’s departure.
“We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best,” a spokesperson told Variety.
HBO Continues Production Plans
The series has not premiered yet, but producers have already completed filming for the first season.
Production took place at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom.
HBO plans to release the first season during the Christmas period later this year.
The opening season adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Unlike the original films, HBO plans to expand each Harry Potter book across multiple television seasons.

Industry analysts consider the reboot one of HBO’s biggest long-term projects as streaming companies compete heavily for fantasy audiences.
Ginny Weasley later becomes a major character in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets after Tom Riddle’s diary possesses her.
Fans have closely monitored casting announcements since HBO officially confirmed the reboot.
Daniel Radcliffe Urges Support for Young Cast
The reboot continues facing comparisons with the original Harry Potter films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.
Radcliffe recently urged fans and media outlets to avoid putting pressure on the new actors.
“When these kids got cast, there’s a whole thing around the internet, around the world, people being like, ‘We’ve got to look after these kids.’ If you mean that, if everyone really means what they are saying, then one of the things you can do for me is not ask about me and Rupert all the time,” Radcliffe said.
Despite the early casting change, HBO continues preparing future seasons.
The network hopes to revive one of the world’s most successful entertainment franchises for a new generation.
Industry experts say the reboot’s success will depend on balancing nostalgia with fresh storytelling and strong performances from younger actors.
