The base model of the iPhone 17 emerged as the world’s best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2026, outperforming both rivals and Apple’s own premium devices, according to new industry data.
Research firm Counterpoint Research said the standard iPhone 17 captured 6% of global smartphone sales during the quarter. This placed it ahead of higher-end variants like the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro.

The strong performance came as overall demand for Apple devices surged in key markets, particularly China and the United States.
Apple records strong sales growth in key markets
Apple Inc. reported robust financial results for the March quarter, highlighting the strength of its smartphone business.
The company posted iPhone revenue of $85.3 billion, up from $69.1 billion a year earlier. It also recorded a 20% increase in iPhone sales in China during the same period.
Analysts said the base iPhone 17 drove much of this growth, supported by its competitive pricing and feature set.

While premium models dominated sales during the launch period in late 2025, demand shifted toward the standard model in early 2026. This pattern reflects a long-standing trend in iPhone sales cycles.
Consumers often buy high-end models immediately after launch. Later, a wider audience opts for more affordable versions.
Feature upgrades narrow gap with Pro models
The standard iPhone 17 now offers features that were once limited to premium devices. These include ProMotion display technology and a screen size similar to the Pro Max variant.
This has reduced the gap between the base and Pro models. The absence of a telephoto camera remains one of the few major differences.

For many buyers, the base model now delivers a strong balance between price and performance.
Behind Apple, Samsung secured several positions in the rankings with devices such as the Galaxy A07 5G and Galaxy A17 5G. Xiaomi also featured in the top 10 with its Redmi A5.
Meanwhile, the iPhone Air did not appear among the top-selling devices. Analysts described its performance as modest compared to expectations.
Future strategy may reshape sales cycle
Market observers say Apple may shift to a staggered release schedule. Reports suggest the company could launch Pro models in the fall and standard models in the spring starting in 2027.

This approach could change seasonal demand patterns. It may also affect which models dominate early-year sales.
Industry reports also indicate that Apple could introduce its first foldable iPhone in late 2026. However, analysts believe it may not significantly impact overall quarterly sales.
The next major test will come in early 2027, when the absence of a newly released base model could reshape demand trends.
For now, the data confirms a familiar pattern. The standard iPhone continues to gain momentum after the initial wave of premium upgrades fades.
