WhatsApp has started rolling out an editing option that lets Android users correct captions on status updates after posting them.
The feature appears in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.30.1. Only some beta testers have access, but the rollout should expand over the coming weeks. Some users on the stable Android app may also receive it during the gradual rollout. WhatsApp has not announced a date for a worldwide release.
No More Deleting and Reposting
Until now, users who noticed a typo or incorrect detail had to delete the entire status and upload it again. The process could remove an update people had already viewed and force another upload.
The new tool lets them change only the caption while keeping the photo or video status in place. WhatsApp Status supports text, photos, videos and GIFs, and updates disappear after 24 hours, according to the company’s Help Center.
Users can reach the tool in two ways. From the status list, they can open the menu beside a shared update and select “Edit caption.” WhatsApp has placed the action beside its other status management controls.
The second route appears inside the posted status. A small pencil icon sits next to the caption. Tapping it opens the editing screen, where users can correct an error or update information without leaving the status view.
Users Get a 15-Minute Window
WhatsApp gives users 15 minutes from the time of posting to edit a status caption. After that period, the option disappears and users can no longer change the caption.
The limit matches WhatsApp’s existing message-editing window. The company’s official Help Center states that users can edit a sent message for up to 15 minutes.
However, status caption edits work differently from edited chat messages. WhatsApp adds an “edited” label to changed messages, but it does not show that label on a modified status caption.
Viewers will simply see the latest version when they open the status. Even people who viewed it earlier will not receive any visible indication that the caption changed.
Gradual Android Rollout Continues
WABetaInfo first reported the tool while WhatsApp was developing it in beta version 2.26.22.5. WhatsApp later refined the interface and released it to a limited group through version 2.26.30.1.
The feature should help people and businesses using Status for announcements, product details, photos or videos. A typing mistake will no longer require them to remove and recreate the entire post, provided they catch it within 15 minutes.
WhatsApp distributes new features in stages, so installing the latest beta does not guarantee immediate access. Eligible users should check the menu on their posted status or look for the pencil icon beside the caption.
The rollout makes Status easier to manage. For now, WhatsApp has not confirmed when all Android users, or users on other platforms, will receive caption editing.
