Pakistan has moved a step closer to expanding and modernising the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) fleet after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held high level talks with Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson at the aircraft manufacturer’s headquarters in Washington.
The meeting, attended by a delegation from PIA’s new management, focused on plans to acquire 16 new Boeing aircraft as part of the national carrier’s long term fleet renewal strategy. Officials said the discussions resulted in significant progress, with both sides reviewing aircraft options and commercial terms aimed at securing the most favourable agreement for the airline.

According to officials, Pakistan and Boeing agreed to work toward finalising the proposed deal at the earliest opportunity.
Naqvi thanked Nelson for assuring full cooperation in speeding up the procurement process. He also praised Boeing’s leadership in the global aerospace industry and acknowledged the company’s contribution to commercial aircraft manufacturing.
The proposed acquisition is expected to play a central role in PIA’s efforts to strengthen its operational capacity, improve passenger services and support future route expansion.
Fleet expansion remains central to PIA revival strategy
The Boeing discussions come as PIA continues an ambitious restructuring programme following its privatisation and management transition.
Earlier this year, Arif Habib, Chairman of the Arif Habib Consortium for PIA, outlined plans to significantly expand the airline’s fleet as part of its revival strategy.
Speaking at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry in April, Habib said PIA owned 30 aircraft, although only 18 were operational at the time. Another five to six aircraft were undergoing repairs and scheduled maintenance.
He said, “Efforts are being made to restore these planes and return them to service, which would raise the active fleet to 26, with a long-term goal of expanding it to 60 aircraft.”

The addition of 16 new Boeing aircraft would represent one of the largest fleet expansion initiatives undertaken by the airline in recent years and could significantly improve aircraft availability across domestic and international operations.

Industry experts say fleet modernisation remains essential for improving reliability, reducing maintenance costs and expanding route networks.
PIA has already begun restoring international services following the easing of restrictions on its operations in several overseas markets. The airline has also announced new routes as part of efforts to rebuild its global presence after years of financial and operational challenges.
Officials believe acquiring modern Boeing aircraft will improve fuel efficiency, increase operational flexibility and enhance the passenger experience while supporting the airline’s long term commercial objectives.

Although neither side disclosed the aircraft models under consideration or the financial value of the proposed transaction, officials described the Washington meeting as an important milestone toward concluding the agreement.
The discussions also underline Pakistan’s broader effort to rebuild PIA into a competitive international carrier capable of serving growing travel demand while strengthening its financial performance under new management.
