Pakistan has received its first Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipment of electric vehicles. The milestone marks a major step for the country’s maritime and automotive sectors. The M.V. Grande Shanghai arrived at Karachi Port with more than 2,000 electric vehicles on board.
The 220-metre vessel berthed at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML). It became the first RoRo carrier to deliver electric vehicles to Pakistan. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs announced the development on Friday.

RoRo vessels transport wheeled cargo. Vehicles drive directly on and off the ship using built-in ramps. This process reduces handling, lowers the risk of damage and speeds up cargo operations.
Karachi Port Demonstrates Modern Cargo Handling Capability
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the government approved RoRo shipments of electric vehicles during a maritime committee meeting last month.
He said the arrival of M.V. Grande Shanghai proved that Karachi Port could efficiently handle specialised cargo operations. He added that the successful operation reflected ongoing efforts to modernise Pakistan’s logistics infrastructure.
The minister said the shipment also highlighted Pakistan’s growing role in global automotive and logistics supply chains.
He added that the government remains committed to improving the country’s maritime sector. He said stronger links with international shipping networks would help expand trade and attract more investment.

Industry experts say RoRo shipping is widely used around the world because it cuts loading time and reduces operating costs. It also allows faster turnaround compared with conventional cargo handling.
BYD Sees Pakistan as a Key Growth Market
Mega Motor Company, the official partner of BYD in Pakistan, confirmed that the vessel carried more than 2,000 BYD New Energy Vehicles. The company described it as one of the largest BYD consignments ever delivered to Pakistan.
MMC said Pakistan’s shift towards new energy vehicles continues to gain momentum. It added that consumers increasingly recognise the economic, environmental and technological benefits of electric mobility. Rising demand has also increased the size of vehicle shipments entering the country.
Vice President Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan MMC Danish Khaliq said, “This milestone reflects growing consumer confidence in NEVs and the momentum of Pakistan’s shift towards sustainable mobility.”

He added that the company had worked closely with its partner to strengthen supply planning and logistics.
BYD Pakistan Country Head Lei Jian also welcomed the shipment. He said the company’s journey to becoming the world’s largest NEV brand had been driven by innovation, quality and sustainable mobility. He added that “Pakistan remains an important market in BYD’s global growth plans.”
The latest shipment comes as BYD prepares to expand its presence in Pakistan. The company is also working toward local vehicle assembly, which is expected to improve supply and support the country’s transition to cleaner transportation.
