A global survey of 24,000 city residents has revealed the world’s most beautiful cities in 2026, with Cape Town claiming the top spot. Participants answered one simple question: Would you describe your city as “beautiful”?
The results celebrate cities that stand out for their architecture, landscapes, culture and unique character. According to the survey, every destination offers something different, from Porto’s riverside charm to Cape Town’s beaches and Chicago’s skyline.
Top 10 most beautiful cities in 2026
1. Cape Town, South Africa (86%)
Cape Town ranked first after 86 percent of residents described it as beautiful. The city lies between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, it offers white sandy beaches, the Cape Floral Kingdom and the dramatic Twelve Apostles mountain range.
2. Edinburgh, Scotland (84%)
Edinburgh took second place. Meanwhile, its medieval streets, Gothic landmarks and elegant Georgian architecture continue to impress both locals and visitors.
3. Sydney, Australia (78%)
Sydney secured third place. Not only does it feature the world famous Opera House, but it also boasts a spectacular harbor, golden beaches and an impressive skyline.
4. Chicago, United States (77%)
Chicago ranked as America’s most beautiful city. Besides its iconic skyscrapers, residents praised its parks, Lake Michigan shoreline and scenic riverfront.
5. Lisbon, Portugal (74%)
Lisbon earned fifth place. Moreover, its colorful neighborhoods, yellow trams, pastel buildings and traditional azulejo tiles give the city a distinctive identity.
6. Paris, France (68%)
Paris remained among the world’s favorites. Likewise, its grand boulevards, elegant architecture, cafés and the River Seine continue to attract admiration.
7. Stockholm, Sweden (68%)
Stockholm shared sixth place. At the same time, its 14 islands and more than 50 bridges create one of Europe’s most scenic urban settings.
8. Porto, Portugal (67%)
Porto impressed residents with its hillside neighborhoods overlooking the Douro River. In addition, visitors admire its colorful buildings and the famous São Bento railway station.
9. Medellin, Colombia (66%)
Medellin secured ninth place. Thanks to its location in the Aburrá Valley, the city combines lush greenery with modern architecture and botanical gardens.
10. Riga, Latvia (65%)
Riga completed the top 10. Finally, its Art Nouveau buildings, medieval Old Town and Alberta Street make it one of Europe’s architectural gems.

Overall, the rankings reflect how residents view the cities they know best. Rather than relying only on travel experts, the survey highlights local opinions. As a result, destinations with outstanding natural scenery, historic architecture and vibrant neighborhoods dominated the list.
