WhatsApp Business Setup Gets Easier With Meta’s New AI Tool

Meta has introduced a tool that lets businesses use AI agents to set up and manage messaging on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Companies can connect tools such as Claude, Cursor, Codex or ChatGPT and describe tasks through conversational instructions.

The company announced WhatsApp Business Tools MCP on Tuesday, September 15, alongside its new AI-focused subscription plans. The tool uses a Model Context Protocol server to connect an AI agent with Meta’s business messaging services.

The change aims to simplify work that previously required developers to switch between several interfaces. These included the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, API documentation and a code editor.

AI agents handle account setup

With the new server, businesses can tell their preferred agent what they want to configure. The agent can then carry out several steps involved in preparing WhatsApp business messaging.

These tasks include creating a WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying a phone number, and registering it for Cloud API access.

The agent can also check Terms of Service status and handle other configuration tasks needed to prepare the service.

Meta’s documentation says the server authenticates through a Meta developer account using OAuth. This provides a common sign-in process across compatible clients. Agents act on the apps and businesses that the signed-in user administers.

For developers, the practical change is a more conversational workflow. They can request an action from their coding assistant while working on an integration.

Templates, testing and configuration checks

The capability extends beyond initial setup to ongoing management.

Businesses can describe a message template they need and ask an AI agent to create it. They can also request changes to an existing template without manually navigating several developer tools.

The agent can test messages and webhooks. Webhooks let connected software receive notifications about messaging activity.

It can also check for configuration problems that might otherwise escape attention. These include issues involving Terms of Service status, payment methods and Business Verification.

Together, these functions bring account configuration, template management and integration testing into the same conversational workflow. Businesses can give instructions in natural language while the connected agent performs supported operations.

Meta expands its AI development tools

The launch adds to Meta’s existing collection of MCP servers for developers and businesses.

Its Meta Social Technologies MCP helps agents discover API endpoints, search documentation and troubleshoot errors. Meta announced that tool on June 30, providing a foundation for AI-assisted integration work.

The company also offers advertising tools through its Ads MCP server. These connect AI assistants to campaign performance information, campaign creation and catalogue operations.

The WhatsApp addition extends this approach to business messaging. Its central purpose is to reduce the manual work involved in getting an account ready and maintaining its messaging configuration.
